Just after Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer announced plans in may to buy Skype, he and Skype Chief Executive Officer Tony Bates had one more order of business. The day we announced, we definitely came to see Mark, Bates said, talking of Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, at a press conference announcing Facebook's plans to bake Skype's video conferencing technology into its social network.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg, declaring the new feature "super awesome", said the one-on-one video communication tool, dubbed video calling, is the next logical step in connecting people. The feature is just the first of many new social apps that will soon blossom aross Facebook,s network.
Consumers will love this, said Susan Etlinger, an industry analyst with Altimeter Group who was on hand for the announcement. There's a horse race brewing between Google and Facebook. And while Google has an advantage with Hangout being able to do group video chats, Facebook has learned a lot about how people share. And sharing is what makes this all come together, because that's more important than things like how many apps you have.
